FAQ
- What happens when someone calls MAP?
- The phone will be answered by MAP’s Executive Director. The Director is the only person who fields and responds to incoming calls and messages. The helpline (207-266-5951) is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The fastest way to reach MAP is to call or text (rather than email).
- Will the Director tell anyone I called or what I called about?
- No. Information received and actions taken by MAP are strictly confidential by rule of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court.
- Is MAP part of the Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar?
- No. MAP is an independent 501(c)(3) organization that does not report to any other entity.
- Since MAP was created by Court rule, does that mean MAP is part of the court system?

- The recipients of emails sent to multiple individuals (i.e. meeting dates for support groups) are always blind copied and names and email addresses are not visible to other email recipients.
- Employees and agents of MAP will never reference or acknowledge an individual’s participation in MAP out in public/at group meetings/in mixed company/etc.
- In general, the Director does not confirm or deny any individual person’s current or past involvement with MAP.
- Any information and actions taken by MAP are excluded as evidence in any complaint, investigation or proceeding before the Court, Board of Overseers of the Bar or Committee on Judicial Responsibility and Disability.
- If I’m concerned about someone else, do I have to know exactly what’s going on with them if I want to call MAP?
- No. All you need to be is concerned or worried about someone based on their behavior, but you don’t need to definitively know the underlying cause(s).
- What will MAP do after I tell them I’m concerned about someone?
- The Director works with referents to brainstorm ideas and possible options/courses of action to take, depending on the situation. Options can be anything from a wait-and-see approach to a more concrete and immediate plan.
- Will MAP let me know what happens with the person I called about?
- No. MAP can assist lawyers and judges based upon referrals, but MAP does not report back to or update the original referent.
- Can I call MAP if I’m not a lawyer or judge myself, but the colleague, friend, or family member of one?
- Yes. Lawyers and judges may also call to discuss options for non-lawyer family members or friends.
- What do MAP’s peer support volunteers do?
- The Director sometimes “matches” program participants with a Maine lawyer or judge who has knowledge of or lived experience with a particular issue. The relationship between volunteers and participants can range from a one-time meeting to ongoing support spanning years.
- How do I volunteer as a peer support?
- Please call or email MAP at (207) 266-5951 or maineassistanceprogram@gmail.com.

- Who is eligible to receive individual therapy from MAP’s Clinical Director?
- Any Maine attorney, judge, or law student (including recent graduates/bar exam applicants).
